AIIMS Doctor Recalls Treating Indira Gandhi!
By: Tupaki Desk | 12 July 2023 11:44 PM ISTState-run All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) is a premium health institute in the country. Politicians are referred to the institution to treat serious conditions. Doctors working at the institution have many anecdotes to share with others given the interaction they have with politicians while treating them.
Doctor Venugopal who treated many national leaders during his stint as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) head recalled some of the anecdotes like treating former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He had brought a book on his memories which is titled Heartfelt.
In his memoir which is published by HarperCollins India, Venugopal recalled how it was treating Indira Gandhi. Talking about the last minutes of Indira Gandhi, he said that she was drenched in her blood and thirty bullets hit her.
The doctors, nurses, and staff worked for hours to save her. To stop the blood leak, I ordered her to be taken to the OT. Bullets started falling out when we are treating her. There are chaotic scenes all over the AIIMS hospital premises.
When we are treating her inside the operation theatre, political discussions are going on outside on who should be the next Prime Minister and when they should take the oath. As the head of the Cardiology department, I took the call to stop the bleeding. We did not wait for the signature also, Venugopal said.
"I was shaken to see the slender figure on the bed⦠she was drenched completely in her own blood⦠The delicate face was pale⦠I saw that they were trying to transfuse the rare O-negative type, which seemed a futile exercise to me as what was going in was coming outâ¦," Doctor Venugopal said.
