Air pollution is a global issue that can have a serious impact on health issues of people. Sadly, the major share of people won't see it as a burning issue and think much about the consequences caused by the air population. A recent survey conducted in the United States sheds light on the seriousness of the issue.

The researchers at the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) had carried out a study on air pollution in India and how it causes a severe impact on the health and lifespan of Indians. National capital Delhi and a few regions in the northern region of the country report air pollution on a large level.

The report says that around 40 percent of the Indian population are at a greater risk of losing their life expectancy by over nine years due to the air population. The air pollution in the country in a few regions has reached an alarming level, the report said.

Going by the findings of the researchers, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh are facing severe air pollution. The University had expressed its concern over the rise in air pollution in the major share of regions across the country.

However, in the report, the researchers had showered praises on the National Clean Air Program (NCAP) initiative started by the union government in 2019 that aims at narrowing the pollution levels in the country. The report said the initiative would increase the life expectancy of Indians by 1.7 years if the goals of the initiative are reached. The Life expectancy of people in Delhi, the region with the worst air quality, will be increased by 3.1 years, the reports maintained.

The NCAP initiative was started by the Centre with a noble cause of bringing down the air pollution by 20%-30% in the severely hit cities by 2024. The same would be achieved by reducing the industrial waste and the pollution caused by motor vehicles with the help of biomass.
