Amaravati Farmers' Protest Turns Violent With Police Lathi-charge
By: Tupaki Desk | 11 Nov 2021 10:30 AM GMTThe farmers from the Amaravati region of Andhra Pradesh who are fighting against the government's decision to have three capitals have intensified their protests and started a padayatra titled 'Maha Padayatra'. The Padayatra had reached its 11th day by Thursday. However, the protest turned violent after the cops used lathi-charge against the farmers near the Nagulappapadu.
Things escalated quickly when the cops and the locals of the Nagulappapadu village had an argument over supporting the farmers. When the cops deployed at the village reportedly asked the villagers to not support the farmers, the locals asked why they should not support the protesting farmers.
This led to an argument and war and words between the cops and locals and to stop the villagers, the police set up temporary barricades and ropes in place. However, the locals went ahead and stood in solidarity with the farmers. To stop them, the cops used lathi-charge that resulted in a few people sustaining injuries.
As per the media reports, the cops have reached the Padayatra centre earlier today and informed the farmers that the election code of conduct is active and hence others than the farmers cannot take part in the protests with this. Amaravati JAC leaders have opposed this and asked how come the cops' issue notices to them.
The lathi-charge incident had raised a doubt among the people that Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy could go on a padayatra in the coming days as he announced earlier that he would embark on a massive padayatra. YSRCP sympathisers express doubt that won't the farmers and villagers create any obstacles for the padayatra.
Needless to say, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy earned a lot of negative marks with this as the farmer leaders are alleging that the lathi charge was done with a sole intention to stop them from carrying out the protest which is being done peacefully. The Padayatra is being monitored by the Amravati Joint Action Committee (JAC), which is backing the Amaravati protest by the farmers. The "Court to Temple" padayatra will be concluded on the 17th of December after reaching the temple city Tirupati.
