Another anti-BJP CM falls, Jharkhands Hemanth Soren Disqualified

In a big jolt to tribal-based Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, the election commission has disqualified Chief Minister Hemanth Soren from the state assembly. He has been disqualified as an MLA as he had violated the Article 9A of the Office of Profit and Public Representation Act 1951. The disqualification has been sent to the Governor of the state, who will issue a gazette confirming the same by 3 PM on Thursday.

The Election Commission has upheld the allegation that Chief Minister Hemanth Soren has misused his office for unlawful profit. He has been accused of granting a stone quarry licence to himself. Ironically, he himself is the minister for mines and geology. Thus, he has issued a licence to himself and this is a gross violation of the public representation act.

RTI activist Shiv Shankar Sharma lodged a complaint with the Election Commission seeking the disqualification of the chief minister. After a thorough inquiry, the election commission has upheld his complaint and ordered the disqualification of Hemanth Soren. Soren's father Shibu Soren too was involved in the cash-for-vote-scam during the PV Narasimha Rao period. He was on the dock for accepting money to vote for the Congress government during a no-confidence motion.

Sources say that the JMM-led government is on the look out for a successor to Hemanth Soren. They say that the CM's post will likely remain in the family of Soren. His wife Kalpana Soren is likely to be made the chief minister in his place. If that happens, she will be the only second politician-wife to become the chief minister after husband is ousted on corruption charges. Earlier, Rabri Devi was made CM after Lalu Prasad Yadav was arrested.
