The much-talked-about local body polls in Andhra Pradesh, which went through many twists and turns since last year has undergone one more shocking turn today.

The Andhra Pradesh government faced a rude shock after the State High Court rejected the petition filed to seek a stay on conducting local body polls due to the Coronavirus outbreak in the state.

The state government, which has earlier opposed the idea to go for local body elections in February 2021 knocked on the doors of the High Court challenging the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission(SEC)'s decision on the elections.

The Advocate who appeared before the High Court on the behalf of the state government told the court that the SEC has not consulted the government before taking a call on local body elections

On the other hand, Advocate Ashwin Kumar, who represented the SEC countered Government's lawyer arguments. He said the SEC tried to consult the state government, but there is no reply from the government.

After hearing the arguments of both the parties, the High Court adjourned the next hearing of the case for tomorrow.

It has to be noted that, earlier in November, Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary Nilam Sawhney has written a letter to State Election Commissioner (SEC) Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar over the local body elections.

In the letter, CS Nilam Sawhney cited the Coronavirus pandemic as a reason and said it is not possible to conduct the local body elections in February next year.
