Ahead of the forthcoming elections in five Indian states, a Non-Governmental Organisation(NGO) has knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court seeking directives to stay the issuance and sale of electoral bonds.

As a major sigh of relief for the contestants, the Supreme Court bench refused to issue orders to stop the sale of the electoral bonds ahead of assembly polls.

The NGO Association for Democratic Reform (ADR) moved the Apex Court to seek directives to see that the electoral bonds were not sold ahead of the Assembly polls. The three-bench judge led by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde heard the petition.

Appearing for the ADR, Prashant Bhushan told the court that the sale of electoral bonds ahead of the elections could result in the political parties receiving the flood of illegal and illicit funding.

To strengthen his argument, Mr. Bhushan has also submitted the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor's letter which opinions that the electoral bonds would have a negative impact on the country's financial system.

Citing that the electoral bonds were being issued periodically after consulting the Election Commission of India, the Supreme Court bench said there is no need of issuing orders to temporarily stop the sale of electoral bonds.

As per the election schedule issued by the Election Commission of India, the forthcoming elections in four states and one Union Territory will commence on March 27 and comes to end on the 29th of April. The vote counting will take place on May 2.
