Back When A Coach Advised Indian Players to have sex before playing matches
By: Tupaki Desk | 2 July 2021 10:04 AM GMTSouth African Sports Science professional Patrick Anthony Howard 'Paddy', popularly known as Paddy Upton, who earlier worked as mental conditioning coach of Team India from 2008 to 2011 had released his memoir 'The Barefoot Coach' in which he spoke about various things.
In his book, Paddy Upton maintained that he had advised the players to have sex before the 2011 world cup matches. India had won the 2011 edition of the world cup and lifted the trophy after 28 years.
His advice did not go well with the then head coach Gary Kirsten, who had a big role in India winning the World Cup. He became angry with my advice and I had to apologize to Gary for this, he said.
Going by the information he shared in his book, the former mental conditioning coach advised the players to have sex, while he was preparing the notes for the players of Team India for the 2009 edition of the Champions Trophy.
In his memoir, he drew comparisons between the leadership of former skippers Anil Kumble and M.S Dhoni. Who used to lead the team in the longer format of the game and the 50-over format respectively.
He said, Anil Kumble had made a rule that players coming late for the team meetings will have to pay a fine of Rs 10,000, while Mahendra Singh Dhoni brought a system that every time a player comes late to the meeting, the other players will be playing Rs 10,000 per head.
Paddy Upton, who earlier worked with the Rajasthan Royals team in the Indian Premier League(IPL) as a head coach said that the owners of the team not spending total money to bid for the players in the auction was one of the major reasons behind the team facing difficulties.
He went on to say that, this is the reason behind the IPL franchise going for the young players and players with great potential. Due to this, several young players were shined by the team, he said.
