BCCI's Historic Step To Tackle Discrimination!
By: Tupaki Desk | 27 Oct 2022 9:30 AM GMTCricket is a popular sport in India and cricketers enjoy massive hero worship here. Usually, the Men players get the attention and their matches get good coverage. But things changed largely after the 2017 World Cup where the Women's team lost to England in the final.
People started taking women's team also seriously and the matches are also getting good coverage. The Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) also started focusing on having an IPL-like tournament for women's cricket too to give the required push.
As another big push, the BCCI announced that women players will also get equal pay as the men players. The contracted women crickets will be now paid the same amount the men crickets will get playing various formats of the game.
None other than BCCI secretary Jay Shah took to Twitter to announce the development. Announcing the news Jay Shah said that he is pleased to announce the big step to tackling discrimination. He dubbed the decision a new era of gender equality in Indian cricket.
As per the existing pay scale, the contracted men players will get Rs 15 lakh, Rs 6 lakh, and Rs 3 lakh for each Test, ODI, and T20 they play. With the new pay scale for women players coming into effect, they will also receive the same amount.
This is surely a piece of good news for the women in blue who are riding high on the recent Asia Cup win. In the final, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team crushed the Sri Lanka team and lifted the trophy. In the Commonwealth Games, the women in Blue won the Silver medal and brought the first medal in the sports for the country.
"I'm pleased to announce BCCI's first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing a pay equity policy for our contracted women cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be the same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Indian Cricket," Jay Shah said in his Tweet.
"The women cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support," the BCCI Secretary elaborated further.
