Nepal Elects First Female President

Devi Bhandari who was a communist leader has long campaigned for women’s rights. She was elected by Nepal's Parliament and she is the nation's first woman to be sworn in as President. Parliament Speaker Onsari Gharti announced that Bidhya Devi Bhandari received 327 votes against her opponent's 214 in parliament amidst cheers of all her supporters.
Himalayan nation was turned into a republic after abolishing the centuries-old monarchy and it was mandatory to elect new president and vice-president, prime minister, and parliament speaker and deputy speaker.
Bhandari is a cancer survivor and widow of late communist leader Madan Bhandari known to many as a charismatic and influential leader of his time. Bhandari is the second president of the country and she succeeds Dr Ram Baran Yadav who occupied the post for seven years. Bhandari came to limelight after the untimely demise of her husband in a road accident.
