The Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2018 meant to award death penalty to Child Rapists was tabled in the Parliament during the ongoing Monsoon Session. Union Cabinet has done an exercise following an uproar over the rape & murder of minor girl at J&K's Kathua and Rape of a woman at UP's Unnao.
Union Cabinet led by PM Narendra Modi has already approved the draft Bill. If the Bill gets Parliament nod, Rapists of girls aged under 12 will received death penalty.
Minimum Jail Term for Convicts in the case of rape of a girl aged Above 12 and Under 16 has been increased to 20 years from 10 years.
Raping a woman above the age of 16 could lead to minimum imprisonment of 7 years to maximum imprisonment of life term.
Judgement in the rape cases should be passed within two months. If any of the parties challenge the judgement in the upper courts, Verdict must be delivered within 6 months.
