A Pune-based businessman who sought a Right to Information(RTI) reply in connection with the loan write-off given during the tenure of Narendra Modi. The data revealed in the RTI reply surprised everyone.

Going by the data revealed by the RTI, Rs7,94,354 crore bank loans were written off between 2015-2019 in the regime of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) which is three times the loans written off during the UPA's rule.

Interestingly, the NDA has written off three times bank loans in just half the time of its regime. While the UPA has written off nearly Rs2,20,328 crore in its 10-year regime, NDA has written off Rs7,94,354 crore in just five years, between 2015-19.

Looking at the loan written off during the decade long regime of Congress, 2004-14), the public sector banks (PSBs) have written off the lion share of loans which is nearly 1,58,994 crore, followed by private banks(Rs41,391 crore) and foreign banks(Rs19,945 crore)

Coming to NDA's regime, the PSBs have written off not less than Rs6,24,370 crore, followed by private banks(Rs1,51,989 crore), foreign banks(17,995 crore).

On the other hand, nearly Rs 82,571 crore was recovered during the five years ruling of the BJP. This loosely translates to nearly 12 percent of the loans that were written -off during the regime.
