BJP beats Cong in Rajya Sabha 1st Time in 65 Yrs
By: Tupaki Desk | 4 Aug 2017 9:20 AM GMTBJP emerged as the Single Largest Party in Rajya Sabha, the record which Congress has been holding for the past 65 years got shattered. Currently, BJP have 58 members and Congress has 57 members in the 245-seat Upper House.
Actually, Congress was supposed to remain as the largest party in Rajya Sabha till 2018. Demise of T-Congress MP Palvai Govardhan Reddy and Sikkim Congress MP Haji Abdul Salam led to this situation.
Next week, Rajya Sabha Polls will be held for 8 seats in West Bengal and 3 Seats in Gujarat. BJP is likely to win 2 seats in Gujarat and would be giving a tough fight to Congress Leader Ahmed Patel in the third seat. Whereas in West Bengal, TMC and BJP share 5 seats and 1 seat respectively. It's too early to say which party bags the remaining seat.
In 2018, BJP will bag 8 out 9 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh because of its historic victory in Assembly polls this year. In that way, The Saffron Party consolidates it's No.1 Position in the Upper House.
