Can Chandrababu win back BJP with his support to Draupadi Murmu?

It is now becoming increasingly clear that the opposition TDP in Andhra Pradesh is using the pretext of presidential elections to get closer to the Narendra Modi-led NDA. Even without the BJP asking or lobbying for it, the TDP has unilaterally extended its support to BJP candidate Draupadi Murmu. This is TDP's first ploy to inch closer to the BJP.

In fact, it was Chandrababu Naidu, who broke the alliance with the BJP. Between2014 and 2018, the BJP was part of Chandrababu Naidu's ministry and TDP's Ashok Gajapati Raju was part of the NDA government at the Centre. But, the TDP later walked out of the alliance and the BJP retaliated by making its two ministers - Kamineni Srinivas and Pydikondala Manikyala Rao - resign from the TDP government.

Chandrababu Naidu paid a heavy price for this. He lost to the YSRCP badly and lost power. Since then, Chandrababu, who realized the folly of walking out on the BJP, has been making every conceivable effort to rejoin the BJP. However, the BJP has shown no interest in responding to Chandrababu's overtures.

Now, a desperate TDP has announced unilateral support sans any conditions to Draupadi Murmu. Interestingly, Chandrababu himself went ahead and extended the party's support to the BJP candidate. The BJP, which is comfortably placed and can get its candidate elected as the president of India without even approaching the TDP, stayed lukewarm towards the TDP.

The only concession the BJP made to the TDP was to attend a separate programme hosted by the TDP in support of Draupadi Murmu. But, will the BJP allow the TDP back into the NDA and forge an alliance with the TDP in Andhra Pradesh? Unlikely, say those in the know of the BJP's strategies.
