One Candidate - One Seat, Not Two: EC

Election Commission of India filed an affidavit in the supreme court seeking amendment to the Section 33(7) of the Representation of People Act which permits a politician from contesting from two seats.
A PIL challenging the validity of the provision allowing a candidate to contest from two seats was moved in the Supreme Court. Subsequently, An order was passed asking Election Commission to file it's response to the petition. EC filed the affidavit seeking discontinuation of the existing practice. 'If a candidate contests from two seats, He/She has to resign from one of them in case if the individual wins both. This a burden on public exchequer. And it's also like an injustice to the voters of the constituency who elected the Candidate,' read the affidavit.
Amendment to Section 33(7) of the Representation of People Act will restrict a candidate from contesting in more than one seat. Election Commission brought this proposal in 2004 itself. EC sought a provision to make the candidate contesting from two seats bear the cost of the by-election if the rule can't be scrapped. If the Apex Court responds positively, People across the Nation will appreciate such an order.
