Relief for TRS: Car look-alike symbols removed from 'free list'

In a major relief to the ruling TRS in Telangana, the Central Election Commission has removed free election symbols that could be confused with the TRS symbol of Car. Symbols like autorickshah, truck, hat and iron box have thus been removed from the free symbols list in Telangana.
The TRS has strongly pleaded for excluding these look-alike symbols as confused voters who indent to vote for the car end up voting for these symbols. The TRS argued that in 2018 assembly elections, Truck symbol was given for those contesting on Samajwadi Forward Bloc ticket. These candidates ended up with more votes than even national parties. The party argued that the Truck symbol got such huge number of votes only because the voters confused it with the car symbol.
It also felt that it lost Dubbak because of the symbol 'rolling pin with board' symbol. The candidate who had this symbol got 3570 votes, while the BJP could win only by 1431 votes. The TRS felt that many people confused this symbol with car and ended up voting for the independent. It may be recalled that the Telangana state election commission has removed these symbols from the free symbols list in the municipal elections.
