Union Government raised the Speed Limits of vehicles in Cities in the country citing the increased number of ring roads and arterial stretches. At the same time, State Governments and Local Authorities were allowed to make changes to the speed limits considering the safety of the people.

As per the proposal approved by Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Maximum Speed Limit for cars on urban roads has been increased to 70 km per hour. While the Speed Limit for Cargo Vehicles is 60 kmph, Two-Wheelers were granted permission to go at a speed of 50 kmph.

Currently, The speed limits set by local authorities range from 40-50 kmph. They could now either maintain the same limit or raise it slightly, but not more than what's recommended by the Centre.

Cars on Expressways can now go at a speed of 120 kmph. No action would be taken on the drivers if the speed of their vehicle varies just 5 percent of the maximum speed limit.

In 2016, Around 74,000 people lost their lives in India due to speeding. How could Centre justify its move?
