Jagan Reddy and Chandrababu Chowdary: Caste dominates political discourse in AP
X
Till recently, caste was spoken about in hushed tones. Even diehard politicians were cagey talking about it. Though caste equations were taken into consideration at the time of elections, the politicians used words like social category to camouflage their real intentions. But, that seems to be passe. The Opposition TDP has begun talking about Chief Minister YS Jagan's community openly. Not to be outdone, even the YSRCP has started using caste affiliations in political discourse.

Ever since Jagan came to power, the opposition TDP has begun addressing him as Jagan Reddy instead of mere Jagan Alluding to his caste at every given opportunity, the TDP is seeking to portray the present government as the government of the Reddy and for the Reddys. It is another matter that the Reddys are unhappy as they feel they are under-represented in the government and the party.

Not to be outdone, the YSRCP too has begun addressing Chandrababu and Lokesh as Lokesh Chowdary and Chandrababu Chowdary. Even Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan is being addressed as Pawan Naidu to remind the people about his caste.

Terms like "Kamma"ravati for Amaravati are also becoming increasingly popular in public parlance. In fact, Congress leader and former MP Renuka Chowdary took strong objection to this word at a meeting of the Kamma community in Hyderabad recently. Even film maker Bandla Ganesh took objection over MP Vijaya Sai Reddy slamming the Kamma community. He joined the issue and defended the Kamma community strongly. Thus, castes are being used to settle political scores in AP.
