Can't Replace Death-By-Hanging: Centre
By: Tupaki Desk | 24 April 2018 10:51 AM GMTA petition was moved in the Supreme Court challenging the death by hanging of convicts. The plea highlights Article 21 (Right To Life) of the Constitution which offers right to execution of a prisoner in a dignified manner with less pain.
During the hearing on Friday, The Supreme Court asked Centre to file it's affidavit on the plea. Today, Centre submitted an affidavit saying death-by-hanging is way better than other ways of implementing death penalty.
Whereas, Advocate Rishi Malhotra who filed the PIL argued sanctity of life shouldn't be ignored and other than hanging should be preferred. Even the constitutional validity of the provision has been challenged by him.
Counsel for Centre argued death-by-hanging is less painful than injecting poison or shooting with a gun. The Apex Court was informed hanging is the best/easiest way to implement death penalty.
