Centre begins moves to discuss special status for AP

The Central Government has finally decided to address the contentious issues between both the Telugu states. The Centre has constituted a three-member committee to address the post-bifurcation issues and would organise a video conference on February 17. A nine-point agenda has been finalised and quite significantly, the special status to Andhra Pradesh is one of them.

Thus the special status issue, long believed to have been a closed chapter, has been revived. The meeting would cover the hitherto unresolved issues pertaining to institutions under the Schedule 9 and 10 of the AP Reorganisation Act.

The agenda include: division of AP State Finance Corporation, power sharing between AP and Telangana, Tax related disputes, Division of financial assets including the bank deposits. Distribution of resources, Special assistance to the perennially drought affected areas in North Andhra and Rayalaseema.

AP principal secretary for finance SS Rawat and Telangana special chief secretary Ramakrishna Rao would attend the meet. The understanding is that the meeting is going to be the beginning of a long series of meetings. But, even this is a significant development. The people of both the states are also expressing happiness at the latest development.
