Centre Considering Setting Up Committee On Capital Punishment!
By: Tupaki Desk | 3 May 2023 12:15 AM ISTCapital punishment is the highest punishment a criminal gets. However, almost every country has its own style of implementing punishment. The punishments are carried out publicly in Saudi Arabia so that people won't dare doing crimes there. That is the reason why the crime rates are less in Saudi Arabia.
If we take the example of India, the procedure is different. Convicts are hanged while covering their faces with a black cloth. Their legs will also be tied. The practice has been the same for a few decades now. But a petition was filed by a lawyer saying that the procedure is cruel.
Hearing the petition, the Supreme Court bench made some key directives to the centre on capital punishment and said that other ways of implementing the punishment should be studied. Amid the orders, the Union government took a big decision to set up a committee.
Attorney General R Venkataramani who appeared for the Centre for the hearing told the Supreme Court that the government is considering setting up a committee to study the issue of capital punishment. Hearing this, the bench said that the issue would be heard again after the summer vacation.
"The Learned Attorney General states that the process of appointing a committee was under consideration. In view of the above, we will give a fixed date after the (summer) vacation," the bench said during the arguments.
The Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice J B Pardiwala heard the arguments and are satisfied with the arguments placed by Attorney General R Venkataramani on behalf of the union government.
