Centre Lifts ban On jallikattu in Tamil Nadu

The Central government on Friday lifted the ban on the conduct of jallikattu(Bull tame game) in Tamil Nadu. The decision comes after political parties and organizers of the bull taming sport mounted pressure on the State and Central governments with protests demanding ban on the traditional game. Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan announced the news on his Twitter handle. In May 2014, the Supreme Court banned the sport citing animal welfare issues and the Ministry of Environment also notified against the use of bulls in any such activity in 2011.

As part of the game a bull is released in an open ground while players try to take control of the animal. A team of players attempt to subdue the bull within a specific time.In 2004, at least five people were reported dead and several hundreds injured when the bulls went berserk. However, the Animal Welfare Board of India is planning to challenge the order immediately.
