People migrate to towns and cities in search of employment and better lifestyle. This is increasing pressure on urban infrastructure like housing etc. As the population is increasing at a rapid pace in the urban areas the government is unable to provide the sufficient housing facilities to the people. There is a scarcity of housing facilities for all the population living in urban areas. To address this issue Central government has approved a new scheme 'Housing for all by 2022'.

What is surprising here is that there are sufficient number of houses in the urban areas which are lying vacant as the majority of them are scared to give it on rent because of the rental policies in the country. Under Housing for all by 2022, the government devised a new policy National Urban Rental Housing Policy to encourage the house owners to rent their houses which are lying useless. This will benefit the people who are searching for the houses.

The reports indicate that 27.5% of the urban population live in rented houses and 1.11 crore houses are lying vacant. So, the government devised the NURHP to make it beneficial to both the house owners as well as rent house seekers. This policy addresses the issues of owners as well as tenants. Union cabinet is going to give a green signal to this policy very soon.

Though Housing falls under the jurisdiction of states, the Central government is going work closely with the state governments to achieve 'Housing for all by 2022' mission. Analysts are estimating that this new policy will make way for new business opportunities and Rental Management Companies will enter the sector to seize the business opportunities.

NURHP is divided into 3 categories. Social Rental Housing (SRH) will give priority to SC, ST, OBC, Senior citizens. This is also applicable to the temporary slum dwellers. The second category is Market Based Rental Housing(MRH). Students, professionals, government employees will fall into this category. Others will fall into Private Rental Housing(PRH) category.
