Centre's shocker: Polavaram not possible within deadline
By: Tupaki Desk | 6 Dec 2021 1:21 PM GMTIn what is being seen as a shock to AP Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Central Government has on Monday said that the Polavaram project may not be completed even by 2022 end. The Centre has issued a statement in Lok Sabha which said that Jagan Mohan Reddy’s claim that Polavaram would be completed by 2021 December was simply not possible.
The Jal Shakthi Ministry said that due to Covid, the works on Polavaram are going at a slow pace. Only 88 per cent of the SpillWay, 73 percent of Approach Channel Earth works and 34 per cent of pilot channel works were completed. Thus the completion of the project within the timeframe specified was not possible. The government in a reply to TDP MP Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar said that the project cannot be completed as per the decided timelines.
After YS Jagan came to power, he slowed down the Polavaram works. The reverse tendering process put in place by YS Jagan government has affected the speed of the works. The Centre too has begun taking a stricter view about fund release. Now it is becoming increasingly clear that the project may not be completed anytime before end-2022.
