The Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister K. Palaniswami took a shocking decision to double the seating capacity to 100 percent from 50 percent in the theaters ahead of the Pongal season which is very crucial for the industry.

The decision from the state government came when the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)'s guidelines over the theater seating capacity, which was fixed at 50 percent are still in effect.

Given the prevailing situations, the MHA extended the existing guidelines under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 till the 31st of January 2021. The orders were issued by MHA in late December.

The move from the TN government did not go well with the union government. The centre directed the state government to take the decision to allow theaters with 100% occupancy.

The Union Home Ministry in its statement directed the Tamil Nadu government to take back the decision which violates the orders issued by the Centre related to the theater occupancy.

The orders issued by the union government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi pertaining to the Covid-Appropriate behavior says the people should follow the instructions like wearing face mask outdoors and maintaining physical distancing.

The latest development is a shock for Kollywood, Tamil Film Industry which hoped to recover from the losses faced during the lockdown period in the Pongal season.
