As predicted in these columns, the TDP suffered a massive rout in the panchayat elections in Kuppam region of Chittoor district. Now, Kuppam region is the bastion of former CM and TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu. The results have left the TDP and Chandrababu in a state of daze.

Chandrababu Naidu has been representing Kuppam and he has won Kuppam for seven consecutive terms. In the 2019 elections, Even Panchayat elections were a one-sided affair. however, the YSRCP had put up a tough fight and has even led over Chandrababu for sometime during the counting of votes. In the present panchayat elections, the TDP has lost 90 per cent of the seats. Out of the 84 panchayats in the constituency, the ruling YSRCP has won as many as 79 per cent, leaving the TDP with just five seats. In the last panchayat elections held in 2013, the TDP had won 81 out of 93 seats. The YSRCP has attributed the massive success of its candidates to the welfare schemes and the developmental activities initiated by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The YSRCP leaders were quick to highlight the discomfiture of Chandrababu Naidu. Minister Botsa satyanarayana, Kurasala Kanna Babu and several others have said that Chandrababu may have to look for another constituency to contest from in 2024 elections.
