Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley regarding Goods & Services Tax. He sought exemption of GST on Beedi citing it's the livelihood for thousands of workers and imposing tax will have a negative impact.
Pointing out the 12 percent tax levied on Granite and Marble raw blocks & 28 percent tax on finished products, KCR informed Centre that there are around 2,000 granite processing units in Telangana. 'While they provide direct employment to 2 lakh people, Around 5 lakh people were getting benefited from it indirectly. High Tax Slab will lead to closure of many granite processing units,' he adds.
Last but not the least, Chief Minister disapproved GST on projects like Mission Bhagiratha and Irrigation Projects as it would increase the cost of the projects. He appealed Centre to either offer tax exemption to such infrastructure programmes or place them in lower tax slab of 5 percent.
