Coal belt worries TRS leadership
By: Tupaki Desk | 28 Jun 2020 5:45 AM GMTThe GHMC elections may be round the corner. But, for the TRS winning another area is of a greater importance. That is the coal belt. The coal belt union elections would soon be held and the TRS wants to re-establish its authority in the region.
In the coal belt trade union elections held two-and-a-half years ago, the TRS had stunned the rivals and won nine of the 11 unions and the main union. The other two went to the Left unions. But, after that the TRS did not do all that well in the Assembly elections and the municipal elections. The TRS had lost in assembly constituencies such as Pinapaka, Kothagudem, Illendu, Sattupalli, Bhupalapalli and Ramagundam, which had coal mines. The same results were obtained even in the civic body elections. In the meanwhile, former Peddapalli MP G Vivek, who was in the TRS at the time of the last elections, had joined the BJP. Another key trade unionist and MLA Somarapu Satyanarayana too has left the TRS for the BJP. Similarly, hugely popular trade union leader affiliated with the TRS Kengara Mallaiah too has joined the BMS, which is closer to the BJP. All these mean that winning the coal belt trade unions is not going to be easy this time.
A victory in the coal belt is important as it reflects the mood of the north Telangana and the coal belt politics will influence the other districts. As a result, the TRS is pulling all stops to win these elections. KCR has asked his daughter Kavitha to focus on the coal belt region and ensure a TRS victory.
