Covaxin effectively neutralises multiple variants of SARS-CoV-2: ICMR!
By: Tupaki Desk | 21 April 2021 12:07 PM GMTAs a major sigh of relief to India, which is battling the deadly second wave of ongoing Coronavirus, a recent study has found out that Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotechâs Covaxin can neutralise double mutant strain, B.1.617, of SARS-CoV-2 and other variants.
In a recent study, the apex medical research body in India, the Indian Council of Medical Research(ICMR) has found significant evidence to prove that Covaxin effectively neutralises the pandemic variants.
The National Institute of Virology of ICMR has isolated multiple variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, like B.1.1.7 (the UK variant), B.1.1.28 (Brazil variant ), and B.1.351 (South Africa variant) and cultured them, the apex body said.
"ICMR study shows Covaxin neutralises against multiple variants of SARS-CoV-2 and effectively neutralises the double mutant strain as well," the ICMR said in a tweet.
"ICMR-NIV recently has been successful in isolating and culturing the double mutant strain B.1.617 SARS-CoV-2 identified in certain regions of India and several other countries," the ICMR said in a post shared on its Twitter account.
The Indian government has acknowledged the double mutant of the SARS-CoV-2 at the end of March. Globally, the double mutant was identified in countries like Australia, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Namibia, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK, and the United States.
