CPM Top Leader Resigns As Son Gets Arrested In Drug, Money-Laundering Cases

The CPM, which prides itself as a Leftist puritan and a vanguard of revolutionary politics in India, suffered a major jolt in Kerala, the only state where it is in power. It's state general secretary, who is considered to be as powerful as the CM, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, had to step down after his son was arrested in cases pertaining to serious offences like drug dealing and money laundering.

Though Kodiyeri said he was resigning on health grounds, it is common knowledge in Kerala that his younger son Bineesh Kodiyeri has been taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate. The resignation is like a jolt to the CPM, which is already facing trouble due to the gold scam, in which CM's close staff members are involved.

Normally, no state secretary has so far taken leave with elections are round the corner. Kodiyeri had handled the earlier assembly elections and his absence this time will have its impact on the party organisation. Questions are being raised why Kodiyeri did not go on a long leave when he went for cancer treatment in 2019 and why he has resigned this time.
