By: Tupaki Desk | 19 May 2022 10:19 AM GMTThe county's top court Supreme Court gave a big shock to Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, who served as an MP in the past by slapping him with a year jail sentence in connection with an old case, which has been going on for a few decades.
The issue which made the Punjab wing of Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu face a jail term of one-year traces back to 1988. It is believed that, back in 1988, Navjot Sidhu was involved in road rage and indulged in a fight with one Gurnam Singh. Sidhu has been accused of hitting the victim on his head resulting in his death.
The victim's family has been alleging that Singh breathed his last with the serious injury he sustained on his head. Earlier, the Supreme Court let Sidhu go in the case by slapping him with a fine of Rs 1,000. But the family did not leave its fight and approached the court seeking directives to give strict punishment to the former cricketer.
With the case coming to the notice of the Supreme Court one more time, the court heard the case and held him guilty in the road rage issue and slapped him with a jail term of one year. The family members of the victim are happy with the verdict and are welcoming the orders given by the Apex Court.
Earlier, when the Supreme Court heard the case, Sidhu's lawyers told the court that there is no concrete evidence to prove the allegations faced by Sidhu and that injuries caused by his attack made the victim breathe his last.
Sidhu has been a key leader from the Punjab wing of the Congress. He served as a Cabinet Minister in the state when Congress was in power. He had many issues with former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and he openly criticized him and played his part in making the Congress leadership angry at him. He was later made the Chief of the Punjab wing of Congress. However, he resigned from the post after Congress president Sonia Gandhi asked him to do the same.
