Delhi High Court verdict on CM assurances
X
The revolutionary and game-changing  judgement that the Delhi high court has recently given on the assurances given by a chief minister needs to be discussed across the country. This is such an important verdict that there should be a national debate on this. Though this verdict is about the Delhi chief minister, it surely has national implications.

The Delhi High Court, it may be recalled, has said that any assurance given by a chief minister should be implemented in toto. It said that the CMs and the governments should not backtrack. While Delhi CM Kejriwal might appeal against the verdict in the Supreme Court, the High Court verdict has definitely opened a debate.

Many CMs give assurances right, left and centre and backtrack them once the elections are over. Both the Telugu CMs are adept in this. The Telangna CM is known to backtrack on his own assurances. Many a time, they even claim that they have gone beyond the assurances and implemented new decisions. But, most of these assurances are only election related. The politicians do not bother about the practicality of their assurances. Once they come to power, they conveniently forget these assurances. Even if they have to implement, there would be so many conditions and restrictions that the scheme would never be implemented.

The same thing happened with the Telugu CMs. They gave lot of assurances during the time of elections and failed to implement them after the elections were over. If the people cite the Delhi high court verdict and demand action on the given assurances, these CMs would sure have a tough time. So, they would be more careful about the assurances they give from the next time.

But there is a flip side to this. What if the Supreme Court strikes down the Delhi High Court verdict? Then everything would be back to square one. What if the Apex Court upholds the Delhi high court? Are we in for the long-winding legal procedures and the CMs would leave their office before the Supreme Court pronounces its judgement?
