Disturbing Photo of Elephants Wins Prestigious Photo Award

A disturbing image of a herd of elephants eating from a garbage dump in Sri Lanka has won the Royal Society of Biology (RSB) photo competition 2020. These images spoke louder than words and told the devastating story of a herd of elephants foraging on a waste tip.
Titled 'The story Of Pallakaddu Elephants', the photograph conveys a disturbing message about the changing face of Earth.
This photo captured by freelance photographer Tharmapalan Tilaxan on his camera near the wildlife sanctuary in Ampara district. Hundreds of elephants eat waste and die of disease here every year.
Authorities there, in response to the photo, have now banned the dumping of garbage near wildlife sanctuaries. The BBC reports that Tilaxan won $ 1,000 (over Rs. 72,000) in prize money this year in competition with the theme 'Our Changing World'.
