The century-plus old party Congress faced a major hammer blow in the 2014 elections. Since then, the party started losing its hold in several states gradually. Congress leaders shifting their loyalties to other parties made the party even weaker.

A recent report of the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), a poll rights group explained how Congress lost its leaders after they shifted their loyalties to other political outfits.

According to the report, not less than 170 MLAs have left the Congress party for other parties in a span of four years, between 2016-2020. On the other hand, a mere 18 leaders bid goodbye to BJP.

The poll rights group in the report maintained that, during the same period, 182 legislators who are re-contesting the polls wore the BJP shawl. Congress and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) stools in the next place with 38 and 25 joinings.

The Congress party had also lost the highest number of Rajya Sabha members during 2016-20. Five Lok Sabha members bid goodbye to the saffron party and joined other political outfits, before the 2019 elections, the report maintained.

The report mentioned the instances of Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, and Karnataka where the government fell with the MLAs shifting their loyalties.

To compile the project, the Association for Democratic Reforms had studied the affidavits of MPs and MLAs who shifted their loyalties and went for the polls to re-contest the polls over the past five years.
