EC Proposes Ban On All Party Political Ads
By: Tupaki Desk | 30 Jan 2019 1:54 PM GMTSection 126 of the Representation of People Act prevents Political Ads on Electronic Media in the 'silent period' (48 hours before elections). People always raised the question why political ads weren't prevented on the other platforms which could influence the voters.
Now, Election Commission wants to apply the same rule for both Print Media and Social Media. Election Commission has written to the Union Law Ministry seeking extension of the provisions under Section 126 to print and digital media.
If the Law Ministry brings the necessary amendment, This new rule will be implemented during the upcoming Lok Sabha Polls to conduct free and fair elections. Print Media and Social Networking Sites will end up losing huge revenue if this new proposal is implemented.
Already, Election Commission of India has written to Facebook over the scrutiny of political ads on its platform during elections.
