The demand to impose a lifetime ban on politicians convicted in criminal cases is going on for a long time. The same question was raised in Parliament. The reply of the Law Ministry surprised everyone.

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told the house that not less than 3,095 criminal cases and pending against legislators across the nation. Uttar Pradesh accounts for 68 percent of criminal cases against the legislators.

According to the details revealed by the Law Minister, the Maratha land Maharashtra has the least number of legislators who are facing criminal cases. Only 13 legislators from Maharashtra are facing criminal cases.

On the other hand, the Telugu States tops the list of states in Southern states with the highest number of legislators who are facing criminal cases. The fact is undigestable.

219 legislators from various parties in Telangana are facing criminal cases, while Andhra Pradesh stood in third place with 103 legislators with criminal cases against them.

Karnataka has the second-highest number of legislators facing criminal cases with 143 legislators, followed by Tamil Nadu with not less than 74 legislators.

A question of the life-time ban of politicians with a criminal background was raised in Parliament on Thursday. Replying to the question, the Law Minister said no such proposal is under consideration as of now.

The Law Minister went on to say that 12 special courts to deal with the criminal cases against the elected legislators have been set up in 11 states and Union Territories.
