Fast-Track Courts for 1,581 Cases on MPs & MLAs

A Bench comprising of Justices Ranjan Gogoi & Navin Sinha sought details regarding 1,581 cases against public representatives as per their election affidavit in 2014 General Elections. Centre was asked judgement in how many of these cases were delivered in one year.
The Apex Court recommended life-time disqualification of Politicians who were convicted in the criminal cases. Centre was directed to submit the details within six weeks. Next hearing will be on December 13th.
Election Commission supports the PIL of Advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay seeking life ban on politicians convicted in criminal cases. Whereas, Centre isn't keen to extend the ban period beyond 6 years after serving the jail sentence.
