The Congress, which was in power for decades, and the BSP, which was in power four times, were so badly mauled that together they got less than five seats in the 403-member UP assembly. But, the lone Congress MLA who managed to withstand the BJP tsunami too has created a record of sorts.
The lone Congress winner is Aradhana Mishra from Rampur Khas assembly constituency. Since 1980, no one except the Congress could win from Rampur Khas. More interestingly, only one family has been winning this seat. This family has been the lone ranger holding the Congress flag aloft.
Congress leader Pramod Tiwari won from this constituency in 1980, 1985, 1989, 1991, 1886, 1001, 2007 and 2012 as an MA. In 2013, he entered Rajya Sabha. His daughter Aradhana Mishra contested in the bypolls in 2014 and won. In 2017 too she has won. This time too, Aradhana Mishra has won from the same constituency of Rampur Khas.
Interestingly, Her father Pramod Tiwari has won a record nine times, while Aradhana Mishra won three times. Thus the seat has been with the family and the party for the last 42 years. Though the Congress was badly mauled everywhere in the state, Rampur Khas backed the party and sent Aradhana Mishra to the assembly.
