Finally Congress Relents, Uddhav Smiles

The decks are finally cleared for Uddhav Thackeray to continue as Maharashtra's Chief Minister. The Congress Party, which is an alliance partner in the Government, has finally relented and agreed to withdraw its second candidate for the MLC elections. As a result, the election of Uddhav Thackeray, who is one of the two Shiv Sena candidates, has become a certainty..

Now there are as many candidates as there are seats and all the contestants will get unopposed. Thus, Uddhav too would get elected unopposed. As per the provisions of the constitution, he has to become a member of any of the two houses in Maharashtra before May 27. He will complete six months as the CM without being a member of any of the houses. According to the constitution, a CM has to be a member of any of the two houses and if he is not one, he has to become an MLC or MLA within six months. Due to covid lockdown, byelections to the assembly could not be held. However after Uddhav himself spoke to PM MOdi, bypolls to the council are being held. But, the Congress had put spokes at the last minute by putting up two candidates instead of the allotted one candidate.

Now that the Congress has been persuaded, Uddhav can breathe easy. He can now get elected without any contest and continue as the CM of Maharashtra.
