The Bharatiya Janata Party is in its prime form and spreading its wings in various parts of the country. The party even touched the 100 seat mark in the Upper House Rajya Sabha. No party had managed to do so since 1988. BJP had reached the landmark after winning the Assam Rajya Sabha polls.
Today marks the 42nd formation day of the BJP. On this occasion, let us look at the important events that have shaped the position of the saffron party, which is enjoyed by it right now.
The BJP was founded in 1980 after the Janata Party was dissolved. The party did not get the required start as it had managed to win just two seats. But the Ram Janma Bhoomi played a big role in BJP’s rise in popularity and the movement can be seen as a game-changer for the party. The movement got the required momentum in 1984 and reached its peak in 1990.
The "Ram Rath Yatra" started by LK Advani in 1990 gave the required boost for the Ram Mandir movement. Two years after the movement, the Babri Masjid was demolished by the Karsevaks. Many people including the stalwarts of the saffron party like Advani, and Murli Manohar Joshi were named as the accused in the case.
The Supreme Court in 2019 had ruled out that the disputed land belongs to the temple and a temple should be constructed there. Having said that, the Apex Court ordered the Union government to allocate a land of 5 acres for the Sunni Waqf Board so that they can construct a mosque there.
Though it was the Supreme Court that had given the orders, the credit of Ram Mandir had landed in the lap of the BJP. ‘Mandir Wahi Banayenge’ slogan had worked well for the party and it had won the polls in many polls.
The party’s fortune had changed after the 2014 polls. With the promise of Acche Din, BJP rose to power and it had repeated the magic in the 2018 polls. BJP supporters and followers are hoping to see BJP winning the hat trick polls. However, BJP would have to work hard given the issues the BJP is having with states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Telangana.
