By: Tupaki Desk | 30 Dec 2015 4:18 PM GMTThe US Food and Drug Administration has finally lifted ban on gay men donating blood. There was a ban on gay blood donors in USA. A lifetime ban on men who have sex with men donating blood was initially enforced following the rise of HIV and Hepatitis B in the 70s and 80s.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has lifted its lifetime ban on homosexual blood donors today and imposed several rules. Under the new rules, men can only be allowed to give blood if it's been a year or more since the last time they had sex with another man.
The FDA agency explained that "men who have sex with other men" can now donate blood if they have not been involved in sexual relations in the past 12 months prior to donating.FDA spent several years evaluating epidemiological data from around the world and using statistical models to determine the lift on ban. The Ban was imposed first on 1985 and it declares that any man who has had sex with another man even once since 1977 cannot give blood.
