GHMC Elections: High Court Suspends SECs Circular On Votes Validation

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election, which found itself in the middle of the headlines for several reasons found one more reason to make it to the headlines.

Ahead of the vote counting on December 4, the Telangana State Election Commission issued a late-night circular to consider the ballot paper with other marks like pen and marker as valid votes.

The saffron party BJP, which is very confident about winning the local body elections knocked on the doors of the Telangana High Court challenging the circulars issued by the SEC.

After hearing the petition, the High Court issued orders to cancel the SEC's circular to consider ballot papers with pen marks other than the Swastik mark. The court said, only the ballot papers with the Swastika mark should be declared as valid votes.

The High Court asked the SEC to see that the information on not considering the ballot papers with other marks. The Court also directed the SEC to send a report on the vote-counting process.
