Starting today, Passengers in Vijayawada, Kacheguda (Hyderabad), and Vishakhapatnam railway stations will be able to access the wi-fi using their smartphones for free of cost. Google in collaboration with RailTel, the telecom arm of the Indian Railways, has rolled out free WiFi service at 9 more stations including the above three.

Free WiFi by Google-RailTel took off at Mumbai Central in January this year and it was proved as success. About one lakh people use the service per week at the Mumbai Central station. Now the network was expanded and it is now live in 10 key stations across the country. Google and RailTel have collaborated to make WiFi network available across 100 stations to deliver high-speed Internet.

This service is known as "Project Nilgiri" and it will providing high speed internet by the help of Google Fiber Technology. RailTel owns a pan-India optic fibre network exclusively on railway track. It has laid out over 45,000 kms of optic fibre network across the country. Eventually, the service will be rolled out at 400 stations across the country covering all major rail premises.
