Union Minister for Women and Child Welfare Maneka Gandhi hints making the option of having a panic button in all the old & new cellphones mandatory very soon. This new measure intended to ensure the safety of women might come into effect within six months.

Explaining the steps taken by the Government to assist women in distress, Maneka Gandhi informs all new mobiles will be equipped with panic button. She advised people using old mobiles to consult the company or dealer to avail this feature.

The Minister is confident of achieving good results with the panic button as the moment one presses it, they will be receiving help in some way or the other. In case if the number was pressed for few seconds at a stretch, A call would be forwarded to the pre-determined number entered by the user.

Maneka Gandhi also proposed setting up of Helplines in all the States and appointing Special Police Volunteers in each village for women's protection.
