The Punjab government led by Captain Amarinder Singh has decided to help the young girls in the state by providing free sanitary pads for them. The scheme will be launched soon.

The same was announced on the microblogging site Twitter by the Chief Minister's media advisor Raveen Thukral. Several other schemes were launched by the CM along with the free pads scheme.

"Punjab CM @capt_amarinder announces free sanitary pads for girl students of high schools and colleges during the launch of a slew of welfare projects, including the dedication of January month to girl child through 'Dheeiyan Di Lohri' programme, " the tweet reads.

The government has dedicated January as the month of the girl child. 2,500 sports kits were also distributed among the youngsters on Thursday, media reports claimed.

A series of special events and programs will be conducted for the girls in the state for the popular Punjabi winter folk festival Lohri which falls on the 14th of January.

Looking at the free sanitary pads,e the scheme will be applicable for the girls students studying in high schools and colleges. Girls living in rural areas will also be given the pads.

We live in the 21st century and a majority of girls in the country cannot afford sanitary pads. Nearly 70 percent of girls don't use sanitary pads as they cannot afford them.
