"Will there be a curfew on December 31 this year?" this is the most asked question whenever and wherever two youths meet these days. The Omicron cases rising across the country, will the New Year celebrations turn out to be a washout like it was last year?

The State Government is planning to curb the New Year gatherings this time too. It is already holding discussions with the owners of pubs, hotels, restaurants and function halls on the issue. It is likely to ban all celebrations on December 31. Sources say the government has already advised the pubs and hotels not to hold any celebrations this time.

The government is said to be planning to put the curbs till Sankranthi festival, which is again a major time for huge gatherings, especially in the coastal Andhra. The health officials have reportedly submitted a report to the government outlining the possibility of an Omicron outbreak during the New Year eve. They said that the spread of Omicron is relatively faster.

The officials are mulling curbing even festivities in apartments, colonies and gated communities. They are already holding discussions with the colony associations. Meanwhile, BJP's Goshamahal MLA Raja Singh has demanded that the government ban the New Year celebrations across the state to prevent the spread of Covid.
