Government Turns Into Film Exhibitor Here
X
Have you ever heard a Government becoming a film distributor-cum-exhibitor? Sounds unbelievable, isn’t it? But this funny surprise is from Jammu and Kashmir. With terrorists imposing a ban of film screening, there is no entertainment for the youth of Kashmir valley. Many youths just come to Jammu region by travelling all day along just to watch films. To provide some kind of relief for the youth of the trouble-torn Srinagar, the government has decided to screen Bollywood films and documentary films in Government-run auditoriums.

The Government is also planning to hold film festivals for children, where children’s films, cartoon shows and documentaries would be shown in places like Baramulla, Sopore, Kulgam, Badgam, Anantanag and Srinagar. In all these places, police protection would be provided to deal with law and order issues.

Till 1989, Srinagar had 10 cinema halls. But, they were all closed down due to terrorist threats. Since then, there are no cinema halls in Srinagar valley. The Government did make some effort to screen films in these halls, but there was a bomb blast in one of the theatres. So, all the theatres got closed once and for all. With this there is no entertainment for the youth in Jammu and Kashmir.

This is driving many youths, who have nothing else to do, towards the militancy, the officials feel. So, they are now screening films in state government’s auditoria across the Kashmir valley.
