Hero took Dawood's help to defeat present governor

In his biography Ram Naik claimed that Govinda has good relations with underworld. He claimed that Govinda sought help from underworld don Dawood Ibrahim to defeat him in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.
"Govinda had contacts with dons like Dawood and Hiten Thakur and I am not hesitating to bring this to light. He used their muscle power to won the elections and it became difficult for me to come into terms after the defeat " Naik claimed.
Govinda refutes Naik allegations and said it was the people who ensured his victory. The actor asked Naik not to damage his image and film career. Govinda contested in 2004 elections on congress ticket for Mumbai North and elected successfully. Govinda was elected to the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian parliament) from Mumbai by 50,000 votes. On 20 January 2008, Govinda decided to leave politics and concentrate on his Bollywood acting career.
