The Government is taking a very serious view of the rumours and falsehoods being pedalled in social media on Corona (Covid 19). The government has asked the cyber departments to keep an eye on those spreading rumours on social media.

On Tuesday, the authorities arrested four persons from Bhongir town on charges of spreading the rumour that one Bharat, a resident of Bhongir, died due to Corona virus infection. They spread this news through their Whatsapp groups. Taking a serious view, the police promptly arrested them. The police are now monitoring social media like Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp and Instagram accounts. They are also looking to book cases under the Section 54 of the National Disaster Management Act 2005. This act is invoked on those spreading rumours and fake news during the time of natural calamities.

The police said that Whatsapp group admins would be held responsible for any fake news circulated in a particular group. The Admins should only post and the others should not be given the right to upload posts on their own, the police suggest.
