Union Government appealed Supreme Court to reconsider the order making playing of National Anthem before screening films in theaters mandatory. This is a U-Turn from it's previous stand. Earlier, Centre asked SC to make playing National Anthem compulsory not only in Theatres but also in Educational Institutions.

But now, Centre informed the Apex Court that it recommends withdrawal of interim order issued on November 30th, 2016 making playing of National Anthem in theatres mandatory. In the last hearing, Supreme Court hinted about making playing of Anthem in theatres optional to curb moral policing in the name of patriotism. 'People go to theatres for entertainment. Tomorrow, A situation where people willn't be allowed to wear T-Shirts and Shorts in cinema halls might arise. Where would this moral policing end?,' questioned SC.

In response, Centre has come up with the above suggestion. An affidavit is being moved in Supreme Court asking it to restore the status which existed before November 2016.
