He gave jitters to BJP, but will he join the same BJP?
By: Tupaki Desk | 23 April 2022 3:57 AM GMTAhead of elections, the Congress Party appears to be cracking up in Gujarat due to internal bickering. Instead of putting up a united show to oust the BJP, the Congress is a house divided with several groups fighting against one another. It now appears certain that former Gujarat PCC chief and Patel community leader Hardik Patel could join the BJP.
Hardik Patel, who was the face of the Patidar agitation in 2016-17, shook the BJP to the core and gave it the lowest tally since 1995. It was because of him that the strong Patidar society was divided and a significant section sided with the Congress. But, today, he is a disillusioned man. He says that the Congress has been mistreating him for the last three years.
Hardik Patel is unhappy that the Congress Party is trying to promote other Patidar leaders in the party and is ignoring him. He says he has not been consulted on several key decisions. He says he has taken up the issue with Rahul Gandhi himself but to no avail. He has recently issued several statements praising the BJP's style of functioning. Political watchers say that he is planning to leave the Congress and join the BJP.
The Congress in 2017 used Patidar icon Hardik Patel, OBC face Alpesh Thakore and Dalit face Jignesh Mewani to take on the BJP. Of these three, Alpesh has already joined the BJP. Hardik Patel appears to be on the way to join the BP, while only Jignesh Mewani remains in the party. However, Mewani is facing cases in Assam for abusing Narendra Modi. The cases could keep him away from the constituency in Gujarat and this could affect his overall electoral prospect.
